Image Stabilisers
One of the main problems when taking digital photos is movement, any small movement while you are taking a digital photo and it will more than likely blur and be ruined, some digital cameras include clever image stabilisers which overcome this movement thus producing much better quality photos in tricky conditions.
It is an unfortunate fact that it is impossible to take a digital photo using the camera in your hands without moving, there are all kinds of natural movements that occur when taking a digital photo so getting a digital camera with an image stabiliser will produce better quality photos in most circumstances. There are other ways of eliminating movement with a tripod being the most popular choice, tripods are excellent for digital photography as they offer a stable base for your camera but they are not ideal for carrying around and casual photography. Using very high shutter speeds can also lessen the impact of movement as the shutter is open for a shorter period of time, this can affect the quality of the digital photo though so is often not an option. This is what makes image stabilisers so good, they are inside the digital camera and automatic so they cause you no trouble and produce excellent results.
The technology behind image stabilisation in digital cameras is very complex but falls into two different types, an optical stabiliser in a lens or an anti-shake system in the digital camera. The optical stabiliser in a lens detects if there is movement using shake detecting gyro sensors that measure the angle and speed of the movement and send this information to a computer chip in the camera. This processes the information and moves a series of lens elements in the appropriate direction to counter-act the movement that the camera and thus producing a blur free photo.
So buying a digital camera with image stabilisation is very useful, they are generally more expensive but will produce better quality digital photos in almost all conditions (especially shaky ones!).
